I would never take my mom to a punk show. Even if I were able to explain to her how pushing your neighbor around is actually considered dancing, there are no parts of rough guitar riffs and scratchy muddled vocals that she’d enjoy. It’s no loss to the punk band. They’re not playing grimy rock ‘n roll for my mother’s sake.
Punks make music for the misfits. Punk will never die because there will always be a misfit searching for a nitty gritty community to accept them. As long as punk musicians continue to write music for the outcasts, they will have a loyal, rowdy fanbase.
Buzzfeed might not be the best place to get news, but web surfers who tread this steady wave probably don’t visit the site for current events.
Essentially, the website is a series of lists. Big photos with small captions. Their target audience is young adults who don’t want to read much but get distracted easily. Come for the post “27 Things to do on Your Day Off”, stay for the “46 Ways Netflix Ruins Your Life.” (Or even “18 Body Positive Style Bloggers You Should Be Following“, which I’m in!) Buzzfeed created a seamless cycle of calculated content, perfectly catering to their specific audience. Their readers feel connected through sorted lists of celebrities, current events and “life hacks.” While Buzzfeed is serving up collections of images and gifs with relatable captions, their readers will keep clicking deeper into the feed’s vortex.
Good content is subjective.
People are complex and every individual has different passions and interests. Creating successful content depends solely on the audience you’re creating the content for, and how useful your content is for them.
For us, good content is feminist dialogue. Our articles are useful because they show the reader another perspective that isn’t driven by the patriarchy, or its standards. Bitchtopia is here for you: the intersectional feminist great mind.
While my mother won’t ever want to join me to watch my favorite rocker shake the homemade stage in a basement in Brooklyn, there are plenty of torn-jeaned hair boppers willing to slide around a beer covered floor.
As long as there is a demand for the content, there will be loyal readers. As long as people have an interest, there will be a demand for content concerning it.
